Athletic Trainer Neila Buday Working with NFL

Athletic Trainer Neila Buday is on Ranney’s fields and courts every day, helping to protect student athletes – and this fall—she’s helping NFL athletes as well. Buday, who has been working at Ranney since 2010, is now a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) Spotter for the NFL. She has been assisting with home games at MetLife Stadium for the New York Giants.

The NFL instituted the ATC Spotter program in 2012, as another way to protect the health and safety of the football players. Independent ATCs are placed at every NFL game to serve as another set of eyes, watching for potential injuries, especially those to the head and neck.

With busy and often chaotic sidelines, NFL team athletic trainers cannot always see everything that happens on the field. They could be tending to an injured athlete or be physically or visually blocked from the field of play. This is where athletic trainers like Neila come in.

“As an ATC Spotter, I provide support for the teams’ medical staff,” she explains. “During the game, I communicate frequently with the team physicians, athletic trainers, and unaffiliated neuro-trauma consultants. Being high up in the booth allows us to see the field better than from the sidelines, and we have the ability to view replays and send those directly to the medical staff. The experience has been fantastic. It’s both exciting and rewarding to work with the NFL and team medical staffs to improve and protect the health and safety of its players.”

Buday received her athletic training education from the University of Vermont, and is nationally certified by the Board of Certification and licensed by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners. She previously spent 20 years working with college football teams, including Columbia University. Today, she watches over Ranney’s 200-plus Middle and Upper School athletes.

“We are so proud of Neila for earning this prestigious on-field position with the NFL,” says Ranney Athletic Director Bobby Malone. “Neila is a champion for concussion awareness, prevention, and testing. Her passion to keep athletes safe and playing here at Ranney—and beyond—is evident through her ongoing professional training and this unique partnership. We are lucky to have her working with our teams!”

Ranney School wishes Neila the best of luck as she continues the fall football season and hopes to see her on the big screen!
