Alum Continues to Support Global Justice through Service

Writes Kristen Guyler, Class of 2015…

Since I was 14 years old, I've participated independently in community service trips abroad in countries such as Costa Rica, Peru, Thailand, Burma, Laos, and the Dominican Republic. Through these trips, I witnessed indescribable injustices. Domestically, I founded Helping Hands of Monmouth County, an organization assisting families and children in transitional housing.

What I took away from my trips and organization was the desire to effectuate change.  I have a burning passion for human rights and justice; I believe in helping those who cannot help themselves. My favorite quote is by Malala Yousafzai who stated, “When the whole world is silent, even voice becomes powerful.” I ultimately hope to be a human rights advocate, either as a lawyer or as a journalist.

During my junior and senior year at Ranney, I wrote Capstone research papers about the Haitians enslaved in the Dominican Republic. I was fortunate enough to meet with the leading activist in the fight for justice, Father Hartley, who was generous enough to connect me with congressmen.

When I arrived at Wake Forest University last fall, I was able to take a First Year Seminar class which focused on multiple modernities and human rights. This course enabled me to expand on my Ranney Capstone paper in ways I had not previously thought of. Beyond the classroom, I've utilized my passion to help others through volunteering with El Buen Pastor, Project Pumpkin, and more recently, with Old Town Elementary School where I teach kindergarteners English.

This fall, I am a journalism intern with The Borgen Project, a nonprofit organization working to eliminate global poverty. Each week, I call and email senators and representatives across North Carolina, asking for their support for a bill pertaining to The Borgen Project. I also write articles for the project to expose different injustices in a variety of countries.  Finally, part of my internship is fundraising whereby proceeds help those in poverty.

From my time at Ranney, I always felt like a member of a greater community that supported each other in all aspects. This support has led me to inquire whether the Ranney School community would be interested in learning more about my campaign! View details.

I greatly appreciate your time and consideration!
Kristen
