Ranney Lower Schools Exhibits HeART

Opening this week is the annual Lower School Selfie Exhibition, to be on display through winter break. The show features:

  • Self-portraits by our Age-3 Beginners, who practiced drawing circles. Lower School Art Teacher Barbara Levine sewed a softie doll based on their portraits to bring their drawings to life.
  • Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten artists drew their portraits using pencil and crayon. Kindergartners also illustrated pages for their own books called, "All About Me." These books will be on display near their portraits.
  • First-, second, and third-graders drew or painted their portraits based on the style of a famous artist from art history.
  • Fourth- and fifth-graders used modern technology to create their portraits. Fourth graders used Adobe Photoshop on the computer and fifth graders used an iPad app called Sketchbook Pro. These young graphic artists worked as photographers to find the letters of their names in nature. They also posed for a shadow and transformed those images into their portrait.

“What I am most proud of this year is a collaborative art project that all the Lower School students, Beginners through 5th grade, took part in,” explains Mrs. Levine. “Everyone designed a heart based on a theme for their grade. Then, faculty members were invited to add a design to the wall as well. This collaborative exhibit brings the creativity of everyone together and it gives faculty a chance to experience how their students feel to see their creative work displayed.”
