Young Roboteers Make Headway in Latest VEX IQ Competition

Lower and Middle School robotics students came out on top at the Ranney-hosted VEX IQ competition on November 19. The VEX IQ curriculum, a snap-together robotics system, has only been around for four years and yet, 84 Middle School teams and 64 elementary school teams were ready to battle on Saturday, marking the largest VEX IQ competition held in the state to date. Ranney had seven Middle School robots and eight Lower School robots enter the tournament, coming out with a 1st place, three 2nd place and two 3rd place wins, among other honors. The competition was divided into two divisions—and two locations—to accommodate the large number of participating teams. See the full results below.

MIDDLE SCHOOL RESULTS

Division 1 (Panther Hall)
  • 1st Place: Team 3815G - Shailen Verma ’22 and Zachary Baron ‘22
  • 2nd Place: Team 3815B - David Tansey ’23 and Anthony Sallustio ‘22, (Christian Virone ’23 was not present at the competition, but instrumental in the design and programming of Robot B)
  • 3rd Place: Team 3815Z - Rishi Sondhi ’22 and Brandon Klatsky  ‘22
  • 11th place: Team 3815D - Leo Eschebach ’22 and Ross Mucciolo ‘22 (Danial Kirmani ‘22 was not present at the competition but instrumental in the design and build of Robot D)

Division 2 (The Commons)
  • 3rd Place: Team 3815A - Tucker Scott ’22 and Ryan Biswal ‘22
  • 4th Place: Team 3815E - Ava Kokes ’23 and Gwen Kokes ‘25
  • 18th Place: Team 3815C - Nick Burniewicz ’23 and Andrew Pepe ‘23

“Meeting and practicing every day definitely made a difference for these Middle School students,” said Middle School Robotics Advisor Stacy Goto. “Students had time to code this fall, so they could compete in the autonomous portion of the competition as well.”

LOWER SCHOOL RESULTS

Division 1 (Panther Hall)
2nd Place: Team “Fire Catchers” - Syena Schaad ‘24 and Brooke Lembo ‘24
3rd Place: Team “Moonstruck” - Sal Principato ’24 and Leo Hernandez ‘24

Division 2 (The Commons)
2nd Place: Team “Red Rover” - John Welch ’24 and Luke Buda ‘24

Additional Lower School teams made it to the top 10. “We are so proud of our students and all the hard work they put into the design, building, and operation of their robots,” said Technology Teacher Maureen Wood, who works with Science Teacher Judy Salisbury to guide the Lower School Robotics teams.

Added Lower School Head Dr. Andrea Danial: “VEX IQ competitions extend the learning experience beyond building and coding, by teaching children to overcome in-the-moment robotic challenges and by pushing them to collaborate with randomly selected competing teams. Students from different teams—and different schools—must work together to earn points for their own robots. This spontaneous and positive collaboration is impressive, especially for new spectators!”

Ranney Robotics would like to thank all of the volunteers, including our Upper School Robotics and Computer Science students, who helped to set up, referee, and break down the event. Follow Ranney Robotics and Twitter@RanneyRobots.
