Ranney’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball team is already making its mark in the first few weeks of the 2016-17 season. “They are off to a wonderful start, having really improved from last year and growing a lot in the short season so far,” says Ranney Athletic Director Bobby Malone. “The upcoming week will be the biggest test of the young season.”
During the week of January 9, the team will compete in four games, including against three teams ranked in the State Top 20. Ranney played Asbury Park at home on Jan. 9 (68-50, Ranney) and played Mater Dei on Jan. 12 (away, 58-56 Ranney; this game broke Mater Dei's 27-game Shore Conference winning streak and make Ranney varsity boys' basketball history. In addition, the Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase Game, originally scheduled for Jan. 7, took place Jan. 10, at 6 p.m. at Brookdale Community College with Ranney facing St. Anthony of Newark. Ranney lost in the last three seconds of the game when St. Anthony scored a three-pointer; final score 51-48. Bryan Antoine took home the MVP trophy for his 19-point and 7-rebound finish.
The boys, Coached by Tahj Holden, entered the week with a 4-0 record (5-0 as of Jan. 10), having edged out Rutgers Prep in overtime on Jan. 6 (90-83) as part of Ranney’s Panther Showcase tournament. Six-foot-five forward/guard Scottie Lewis ’19 was named MVP after scoring 34 points and 14 rebounds in the turnaround game. Sophomore guard Bryan Antoine, also 6’5”, scored six of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer in the last minute to force the game into overtime after the boys had been down by double digits.
Another major contributor to the win was new Ranney sophomore guard Ahmadu Sarnor, 6’1”, who scored 23 points, 13 of which were made in the second half and overtime. See the Shore Sports Zone’s coverage and APP’scoverage.
