Get Ready for Discover Languages Week

Ranney School will mark Discover World Languages Week February 13-16, 2017 with a number of exciting activities across divisions. The annual event was founded by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Language as part of nation-wide efforts for schools to celebrate culture and languages. Below are a few planned highlights - check our World Languages Page for more details.

February 13:
  • Frida Kahlo / Claude Money Exhibition
  • Lion Dance Plus performance for the Lower & Middle Schools: Lion Dance Plus introduces students to beloved Chinese folk art pieces, including excerpts, from Beijing Opera featuring the popular Monkey King character, as well as the Chinese ribbon dance. The diversity of dance selections, authentic costumes, music, props, and background information makes this program an excellent introduction to Chinese culture. • Multilingual book selections & cultural artifacts at the Paulus & Searle Libraries. This exhibition will include literature provided by the Paulus Library and our World Language teachers. IN addition, authentic cultural artifacts from Cuba will be displayed at the Paulus Library throughout the week, thanks to the Center for Latin American Studies, of Vanderbilt University.

February 14

  • Latin Dance Experience: Professional dancer and dance teacher Natalia Cordero returns to campus to teach a variety of Latin moves to students in all three divisions. She will bring flamenco, salsa, merengue, and bachata moves to the Panther Hall.
  • Early Childhood Travels: World Language teachers will take Pre-Kindergarten classes to their Lower School classrooms for special activities where they will learn about cultural artifacts and special festivities from different countries. Students will then continue exploring the beauty of culture and language in their classroom for the rest of the month of February!
February 15

  • Zumba Dance Experience: Certified instructor Graciela Saltos will be on campus for one-hour class as a special treat to our faculty, staff, and parents. Zumba was first introduced in the United States in Miami in 1999. The Latin-inspired dance originated in Colombia more than a decade earlier, when  Alberto "Beto" Perez initiated the Latin dance class now known as Zumba in an aerobics class in Colombia.
