Varsity Boys Basketball Takes Semifinal Loss; Still Makes Ranney Athletic History

The Panthers Varsity Boys’ Basketball team made Ranney School athletic history when it qualified for the 2017 Shore Conference Tournament (SCT) semifinals this month. The team took its season one step further than last year, when they made it to the SCT quarterfinals, but unfortunately, took a loss to Marlboro High School (50-47 Marlboro) in the last minute of the February 21 semifinal, held at the Toms River Pine Belt Arena.

The young team, seeded #2 in the conference and #6 in the state, has five sophomore starters, including Ahmadu Sarnor. Sarnor led the semifinal game with 15 points while sophomores Bryan Antoine and Scottie Lewis scored 15 and 10, respectively, in the second half alone. During the SCT, which began February 14 and involved wins over St. Rose and Middletown North, Antoine hit his 1,000 Ranney career point becoming the first sophomore in Shore Conference history to make that milestone (and the 11th Ranney player to do so).

"It's always tough losing a game in a tournament, especially when you're so close to the finals, but with such a young team, it was an accomplishment getting to the semifinals," says Head Coach Tahj Holden. "We still have a the state tournament, and we're looking forward to getting back on the court and competing for a championship."

The final SCT game will take place February 25 at Monmouth University between #6 seeded Marlboro and #1 seeded Mater Dei. Next up for Ranney, whose season record is 19-4, will be the NJSIAA Non-Public South B State Tournament against Timothy Christian on March 1 at 6 p.m. The game will take place on Ranney’s campus.
