Junior Matthew Chang Leads 2nd Annual Swim for a Cure Fundraiser
For the second year in a row, the Class of 2018’s Matthew Chang of Holmdel led and organized a fundraiser with Swim Across America (SAA) to benefit the fight against cancer. SAA is dedicated to raising funds and awareness for cancer research, prevention, and treatment through swimming events.
With the support of the Varsity and Middle School Swim Teams, Matthew was able to help raise close to $3,500 in just a few weeks, and more than $7,500 in the past two years (read about the
2016 event). The funds will go toward grants for researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to conduct clinical trials leading to new breakthroughs to defeat cancer.
Ranney swimmers also had the honor of meeting and obtaining invaluable swim advice from Craig Beardsley, the SAA veteran celebrity swimmer and member of the 1980 US Olympic Swim Team, as part of their fundraising event. “For every dollar Swim Across America grants, its beneficiaries have been able to secure three or more dollars in new cancer research funding they might otherwise have not received,” said Mr. Beardsley. “Matthew Chang’s leadership in the Ranney Panthers Swim for a Cure is an inspiration as the next generation prepares to fight cancer with scientific breakthroughs … Thank you Matthew, Coach Pete, Coach Jennings, and all the Ranney School swimmers—you absolutely make a difference.”
“Participating in SAA is my way to make a difference to help beat cancer with my love and passion for swimming,” said Matthew, who lost his grandmother in her fight against gallbladder cancer last year. “I am very grateful for the support of my swim teammates and coach in joining me and the SAA family in its fight to find a cure."
Matthew recently received the 2016-17 Varsity Swim Team Coach’s Award, an honor he’s earned three years in a row. His fundraising
page will remain open for the rest of the year.
