News from VEX Worlds 2017

Ranney Robotics Advisor Chiara Shah reported in from VEX Worlds in Kentucky today, sharing both good and bad news about the competition so far…

Ranney has two Upper School teams (competing at worlds for the fifth year in a row!) and one Lower School team at the global tournament, where some 510 teams have been battling it out.

Our A team finished 85th out of 94 in their Upper School division, putting them in the top 5% in the world! Our M Team finished 8th in their division, also out of 94 teams, and was picked by the #1 team to be in the #1 seed alliance. In the elimination rounds, Team M easily won the quarterfinals but lost in semifinals. “They were so close to getting in the finals of their division,” says Mrs. Shah. Only 72 robots made it to semifinal rounds, out of an initial 10,000 teams aiming to qualify. “They are in the elite of the elite! I am so proud of these students for their hard work and dedication. They work year-round -- even in the summer -- so they can come in every day to build. It is truly inspiring!”

There is a sad note to report, however. After the competition, Ranney’s Upper School teams loaded their tools, robots, parts, batteries, and so forth, onto the trailer of fellow New Jersey Robotics Team, Robot Revolution, who had graciously offered to drive Ranney's equipment to and from Kentucky. Their trailer was stolen Saturday evening. “We are beyond sad to lose our world ranked robots, and most of our best tools and parts, however, Robot Revolution themselves lost eight robots that their elementary and middle schoolers were going to compete with starting today.”

Fortunately, the VEX corporation shipped new robot kits to them and they were able to rebuild their robots last night overnight. The local media has covered the story:

Mrs. Shah and the team remain upbeat, noting that it’s “time to start building robots for next year!”

Stay tuned for the results from our Lower School team members Lily Aspen and Parson Glover, and our fellow state competitors at Robot Revolution!
