Young Adult Author Skypes with Upper School Students

English class students in the Upper School had a special Skype visit with author A.S. (Amy) King this week. After reading Glory O'Brien and the History of the Future, in their Fairy Tale Theory class this semester, the students were excited to hear directly from the author and ask her questions.

Says junior Abigail Granata, "
It was an amazing experience being able to hear from an author right after finishing one of their novels. I never thought I would be able to do something like this, so I am incredibly grateful and it reaffirmed my decision to double-up on English in my schedule this year to take this course. Amy was incredibly relaxed, down-to-earth, and passionate about what she does. I especially loved and was inspired by her advocating for careers in the arts and her motivating us to pursue these interests professionally. It was so encouraging and refreshing to hear her combat the stereotype that people in the arts normally 'don't make it' and that they shouldn't even give the field a chance. I walked out of class in awe of her, what she had accomplished, and her strong and passionate voice. I can't wait to give more of her novels a try and eventually try my hand at making it in the arts."

Wenny Xu, also a junior, had this to say about the experience: "Nothing is more exciting than interviewing the author about the book you just read! Her interpretation of certain topics in the book and sharing of her source of inspiration definitely offered us more insights into the book.... At the end of the interview, she encouraged us to make a living with what we love..."

Adds English Teacher Dr. Nicole Martone, who organized the event, “I am so grateful that my colleague, Leslie Patient, invited Amy to campus three years ago and that we have stayed in touch. I'm thrilled that one of my students (Aidan Denver-Moore '17) decided to email Ms. King with a question a few weeks ago, which led to the Skype session. The students in my Women Writers class were mesmerized by her thoughts on literature, writing as a craft, art, photography, politics, family, and feminism. This was the highlight of my semester."
