Hello, my name is Saxon D.. I am in the eighth grade and I have been attending Ranney for seven years.
 
When I went through the transition from the Lower School to the Middle School, I looked forward to the experiences to come. From my first day in 6th Grade, I was guided by teachers as they take a specific interest in each student’s success. All students were given computers for interactive, in-class work and my teachers have always been available to contact by school email.
 
Throughout my three years in Ranney’s Middle School, I learned so much from the Performing Arts programs. The Band, Chorus, and Orchestra all perform a wide array of songs, from Jazz to Beethoven. Before Middle School, I never had experience in a band ensemble. It was a great opportunity to practice as a group with my friends. We had the chance to perform in Panther Hall for the Ranney community. In Band classes, as well as other Performing Arts programs, students not only rehearse music but they also practice and study in-depth Music Theory. Although I don’t favor it, Music Theory builds a student’s knowledge on how music works and can make an excellent musician even better. The school’s ensemble instructors and directors ensure the success of students as musicians and are always encouraging them. I was also given a chance to perform in front of my peers at the Middle School Coffee House, where students can act, sing, dance, and play music of their choice. Although I never partook in the school plays, they happen to be very entertaining!
 
In sixth and seventh grade, I participated on the Middle School Swim Team. We competed and raced against students from other schools. I became a better swimmer through great instruction by the team’s coaches. Students are able to make new friends through social time in between their events at a meet. Older students who may be more experienced are given leadership positions to help others who are not as experienced. This applies to every sport or activity at Ranney. For example, I also joined the Middle School Baseball Team in 7th grade. I had just recently begun practicing baseball and, throughout the season, I was given playing time to grow better not only as a player but as a person. Times in the dugout were great for bonding and brought some jokes. As I am writing this, I am competing in our 2016-17 baseball season – our record is fantastic and we look forward to a championship title!
 
Aside from performing arts and sports, Ranney has a great academic program. In the Math Department, students are placed in math levels depending on their previous year’s performance. This accommodation makes sure that the pace of a student’s math class isn’t too fast or too slow. Instead of 8th-Grade Algebra 1, I am taking a Geometry course this year. Teachers are easy to contact and flexible to allow extra study time if needed.
 
If you are interested in sports, music, performing, or just plain learning, the Ranney Middle School is for you. It offers a wide array of different activities, from Science Olympiad to Robotics to Forensics. If you are looking for a Middle School, I promise that Ranney is the one you should attend! 

Of note: Saxon won Overall Jazz Soloist award at the June 2017 Music in the Parks Festival!
