A crowd of more than 350 parents, students, teachers, alumni, and friends cheered on their fellow musicians at Ranney School’s first-ever benefit concert, Rock For Ranney, on Saturday June 3, 2017. With live performances by 15 bands, featuring students as young as Kindergarten, as well as parents and Ranney alums, the concert rocked the Tinton Falls campus for more than four hours.
Dubbed “Coachella Meets Fall Festival,” the outdoor event was sponsored by architecture firm Mancini Duffy with offices in New York and New Jersey, Asbury Park’s Lakehouse Music Academy, Robbinsville’s NorthStar Vets, Pearle Vision, Playa Bowls, Ranney family The Pepes of Atlantic Highlands, and NYS Collection Sunglasses, owned by Ranney family The Behars of Ocean. The Class of 2010’s Ross Bernstein of Outrageous Parties served as emcee and DJ for the afternoon. Music educators from Lakehouse took to the stage during two intermissions to bring children of all ages up to try new instruments—many for the first time.
Said Albie Monterrosa; Music Director of Lakehouse Music Academy, after the event: "We were proud to be a part of the first Rock For Ranney. Our workshops gave families a chance to take part in one of our group classes where participants learned how to play a song and perform it in just 20 minutes! Kids 5-13 years old worked on the songs 'Sugar' by
Maroon 5 and 'Radioactive' by
Imagine Dragons. It was a great day of community and music!"
Bands taking the stage included more experienced student bands, such as new graduate Sofia Cioffi with fellow alums Ciano Cioffi ’13, Peter Bontempo '13, and Ben Puvalowski ‘13 and their band Littlebear, which is going on tour across the country this summer; family bands such as The Blue Rays, featuring Ranney dad Doug Pepe and recent Music in the Parks winning vocalist Siobhan Jones ‘21; as well as growing bands such as Sons of Mothers, featuring four Ranney fifth graders (Crosby Collins, James Crowley, John Welch, and Jason Woska). Attendees had the opportunity to sample the on-site Food Trucks, featuring some of the area’s best eats, including Fed By Ed, Nettuno, Nada Nut Bakery, and Strollo’s Lighthouse. They also had fun trying Mancini Duffy’s Design Lab tent featuring virtual reality goggles, as well as face painting, a rock climbing wall, bouncy houses, and more.
The festival was chaired by Ranney parents Nancy Leidersdorff of Interlaken, SVP, Media Planning & Strategy at Nickelodeon Networks, and Carey Balogh of Red Bank, founder of Brand Groupies. Concert proceeds will benefit the school’s Parents’ Association, which leads family engagement and school-wide events throughout the year.
