Hoops for the Homeless Event

Followup: This event was attended by approximately 600 people and raised $10,000 for Lunch Break.

Said Athletic Director Natalie Gorman, "We are so proud of our student athletes at Ranney for their hard work and dedication to their academic and athletic endeavors. We hope to instill in all of our athletes a passion to give back to their community in a meaningful way. Scottie and Bryan have chosen to use their very popular status in the community as a platform to help people in need.  We are so proud that Scottie and Bryan have found a way to use their basketball talent to help people right here in Monmouth County have adequate food to feed their families. Additionally, to have Scottie present officer Ryan Daly a community service award was a wonderful way to honor someone that has served our community in a selfless way.  This is truly an example of how our students live part of our mission at Ranney - to contribute meaningfully to society."

On Saturday, September 16, junior Scottie Lewis is leading a Hoops for the Homeless fundraising and awareness event to support the local community. All proceeds will go to Lunch Break, the nonprofit local service provider based in Red Bank.

Explains Scottie, “On July 14th, in Marietta, Georgia, I saw a man, his wife, and their three children asking people for food and money. I witnessed them ask a man passing and he replied, ‘No, I have more important people to take care of.’ After watching that, I couldn’t eat my food knowing they probably wouldn’t eat that day. So I gave them my food; it wasn’t enough for all of them but I wanted them to know someone cared and for the rest of the night it was all I could think about. This is where this idea came from - to use something that I love to help those in need.”

The event, which will begin at 3 p.m. in Ranney School’s Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics (GPA), is being sponsored by the Under Armour Association’s National Team Rio, which Scottie plays on in addition to Ranney’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball team. Activities will include a 3-point and dunk contest, as well as two all-star games featuring Shore Conference basketball players. In addition, Scottie will be presenting Tinton Falls Police Officer Ryan Daly, with a community service award.
