Ranney Sailing Team Wraps up Fall Season with Fourth-Place Finish at Atlantic Coast Championship

Twenty teams representing New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, Wisconsin, Maine, Illinois and Massachusetts converged on the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York last weekend to compete in the Atlantic Coast Championship regatta. Saturday was a bitterly cold day with winds between 10-12 knots.

After an entire day of racing, the Panthers were in fourth place.  Unfortunately, the Sunday portion of the regatta was cancelled due to insufficient wind.  This was the last event of the season and Ranney emerged as the number four ranked team in the Atlantic Coast.

The fall season was a successful one for the Panthers, as they notched first-place finishes in the 2017 NJISA Sailfest Regatta, the NJISA Fall Fleet Championship and the NJISA Team Race Qualifier. The Ranney team also placed third in the MASSA Fall Fleet Gold Championship, fourth place in MASSA 2017 Fall Team Race Championship and a fifth and twelfth place finish in the ISSA Cressy Nationals Radial Single-Handed National Championship.

The success of the team comes from Coach Clay Johnson and team members Luke Arnone, Cameron Giblin,
Matthew Hamelsky, Blake Epstein, Catherine Vucetic, William Bayer, Brooke Schmelz, Hubert Wang, Anson He and Tom Chen. Special thanks to Science teacher Mr. Allen for braving the cold to support the team this weekend.
