Sailing Team Returns to the High School National Regatta

For the second year in a row, the Ranney sailing team qualified for the High School National Championships, which will take place in Galveston Texas.  After winning the NJISA Championship, Ranney earned the right to compete against 18 other schools from five Mid-Atlantic Sailing leagues for three berths to the ISSA Mallory Doublehanded Championship (High School National Championship Regatta).  Teams from New York, Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey all competed for the chance to advance.

After 35 races, Ranney and two other teams were in a virtual deadlock, meaning that the final race would determine each team’s fate.

Luke Arnone and Blake Epstein won both of their remaining races and Brooke Schmelz and Matthew Hamelsky locked down the final race, allowing Ranney to return to the National Championship.

“It is an incredible accomplishment to qualify for the National Championship and the Panthers have worked hard to accomplish this task for the last two years,” said Head Coach Clay Johnson.

Ranney sailors, Luke Arnone, Blake Epstein, Cameron Giblin, Matthew Hamelsky, Catherine Vucetic, William Beyer, Brooke Schmelz and Hubert Wang all contributed to the win.
