Emily Chang Captures Two National Medals at the 2018 US Figure Skating Solo Dance Championships
Congratulations to Emily Chang ‘20 for winning the Bronze Medal in the PreGold and Pewter Medal in the Junior Free Dance events at the 2018 US Figure Skating National Solo Dance Championships. The event was held on September 13-16, 2018 in Barnstable, MA, and drew over 220 athletes from around the country. Chang has been a seven-time finalist at this national championship event and this season again, she earned the maximum qualifying points based on her final overall combined placement at her competition level within her section to qualify. The 2018 Solo Dance Series began in February and concluded in August 2018. There were more than 450 skaters from the Eastern, Midwestern and Pacific Coast sections who took part in the Series and competed in 29 events. Chang finished 1st place in the Eastern Section for Junior Combined FreeDance and 2nd place in the PreGold Pattern Dance events.
The top six skaters from each section who competed in at least two non-qualifying competitions in each level received an invitation to advance to the 2018 National Solo Dance Championships.
Emily has been a freestyle figure skater since she was six years old and started ice dancing at 10 years old. This season, Emily competed in a total of five non-qualifying solo dance competitions, of which she placed 1st at the NJ Council Figure Skating Championships in Morristown, NJ and Wilmington Open in Wilmington, DE; 2nd in the Southern Connecticut Open in Darien, CT and May Day Open in Laurel, Maryland; and 4th in the Chesapeake Open in Laurel, MD.
