Sadie Bahr '29 Awarded Scholarship in International Essay Contest

Sadie Bahr ‘29 won an award in the John Locke Global Essay competition for an essay that she wrote on economics. She was selected from a pool of 63,328 student entries from 191 countries.

The John Locke Institute is an independent educational organization that offers residential courses, revision seminars, essay competitions and special events. The Institute provides educational courses – in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology and Law – designed to present students with new ideas and to challenge old habits of mind.

As part of the award, she was invited to an academic conference and black tie gala in London. She received an academic scholarship and recognition certificate of achievement. She hopes to attend a summer program in Singapore with the scholarship.

The philosophy shared on the program’s website states: “We provide methods and encouragement for refining and developing independent thought, and we promote reasoning skills to cultivate a critical faculty and an analytical cast of mind. Above all, we seek to impart a love of learning that we hope our students will hold on to for the rest of their lives. Most of our courses consist of individual tutorials, small seminars and informal collaboration with other students. Learning is active, and students participate actively, reading, arguing, listening, debating, presenting, writing, and – above all – thinking.”
