Ranney Students Volunteer with Kids Create Change

Ranney School student volunteers worked with DEIB Coordinator Ron Crocker to get involved with the program Kids Create for Change, which is about connecting kids of all ages to share their personal stories through art in an effort to bridge cultural and ethnic gaps. For three consecutive Saturdays, a diverse group of twenty-two children ages eight to eleven from 10 different area schools are meeting at the Methodist Church of Red Bank for Kids Create for Change, presented in partnership with the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, whose mission is preserve and further the civil rights and social justice legacy of T. Thomas Fortune through community outreach, education, the arts and public programming.

“The students from Ranney provided an excellent example of how to be Beloved Community as they helped children with a Cultural Scavenger Hunt, served as mentors and assisted in set up and clean up,” said Bonnie Deroski, Director of Children and Youth Ministries at United Methodist Church of Red Bank.

Kids Create for Change was underwritten by a Peace with Justice grant from the Greater New Jersey Conference of the United Methodist Church and was presented in partnership with Gilda Rogers and the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center.

Assisting in the program is a number of high school students from the church as well as Ranney School students. The sessions, which run from 10:30am-1:00 pm include picture book readings, guest artists, discussion and creative activities. Guests  include the author/illustrator Barbara Willcox DiLorenzo ("Quincy, the Chameleon Who Couldn’t Blend In"), Sira Williams (Red Bank Children’s Librarian), Culture Connection Theatre playback theatre company, and author Diana Lee Santamaria.
