On Thursday, Feb. 9, the Upper School Orchestra travelled to Egg Harbor Township to participate at the New Jersey Music Educators Association Orchestra Festival. The event took place at the Fernwood Middle School in Egg Harbor Township.
The Orchestra performed Concerto for Two Cellos in g minor, PV411 by Antonio Vivaldi (with cello soloists Rowan Johnson '23 and Katie Sung '23) and Themes from “Scheherazade” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, arr. by Richard Meyer.
The students were evaluated and worked with Dr. Mark Kdetsky, a Performing Arts faculty member at Rowan University and supervisor of instruction in Egg Harbor Township Schools. His comments and evaluation will be sent to us next week.
In addition to performing, our students had an opportunity to watch and listen to ensembles representing Southern Regional High School, Creative Arts High School and Egg Harbor Township High School Honors Ensemble and Orchestra. We had a chance to mingle with, get to know, and befriend students from other schools, learn about their experiences in their respective programs, and enjoy lunch with them and with each other.
A few quotes from the reflections written by the US Orchestra students:
"Being a part of the ensemble means a lot to me. I’m proud to be part of the warm orchestra family. I think opportunities like this definitely helped us to become better as a whole." Aiden W
"It was interesting to play it in a different style under a different conductor." Julia Y
"Performing at yesterday’s festival was both a wonderful and insightful learning experience for me. (...) Yesterday proved to me once again just how fortunate I am to have this special group in my life for so many years, as our group had a connection with each other, our instruments, and the conductor that no other group had." Lindsay B
"We have the incredibly important ability to take constructive feedback into account to grow and improve our performance. Equally important to our presentation as performers, we were respectful of the other schools, understanding the courage it takes to get up onto that stage and valuing them as musicians." Members of the Cello Section (shared thoughts)
Overall, while reflecting on yesterday's event, both students and I appreciated the opportunity to learn and grow both musically as individuals and as an ensemble. We all enjoyed the NJMEA Festival experience and all agree that we would definitely look for more opportunities similar to this one in the future.
