Ranney Celebrates World Language Week February 3-7

Ranney’s World Language Department and Honor’s Societies planned activities throughout the week for students to celebrate culture and World Language.

Some highlights from the week include:

Doug Snelson, award winning author of Who's Got the Face?, a 48 page, rhyming children's picture book that takes a child through the day of a playful, energetic dog named Face, read to Beginners through Grade 2.

Natalia Cordero, a Long Branch native, visited Ranney School to teach our students various forms of dance. She came to teach Upper School students a Latin fusion class with the influence from Jamaica and Dominican Republic moves from dembo y bachata. Students were able to learn some steps and build a choreography as well. She also taught Flamenco dance to third, fourth and fifth grade students.

Mrs. Kiviat brought her 6th grader students to the dining hall for a tapas workshop. The students learned about the tradition and history of Spanish tapas, and then they tried their hands at “pan con tomate” (bruschetta) and a butter bean dip.

Master Kampang Cheung came to our campus to teach our students Chinese Martial Arts and Lion Dance. Master Cheung taught two lessons at Panther Hall. During the lessons, Ranney students first learned the steps of Lion Dance with the Lion costumes and played Chinese traditional drums and gongs. Lion Dance is a Chinese New Year tradition to bring good luck. In addition, students learned Long Fists, which is a popular style of Chinese Martial Arts, and some movements of self-defense.
