Lower School Counselor Focuses on Social-Emotional Learning

Lower School Counselor, Natalie Minichino, "Mrs. M." to the kids, loves spending time in the classroom. A former teacher herself, Mrs. M. now dedicates her time to the social-emotional learning and well-being of Lower School students.

During her bimonthly classroom visits, she pairs stories or lessons with fun activities or projects to help students build coping skills, emotional regulation, teamwork, and personal growth.

She also meets individually with students--either virtually or in person--and is a resource for parents, too.

This week, Mrs. M visited the Kindergarten classes to share a book and craft.

Share Some Kindness, Bring Some Light by Apryl Stott tells the story of Bear and his human friend, Coco. Bear is sad because all of the other animals in the forest think he's mean because he's so big. Coco offers to help him make friends, sharing her grandmother's advice: "When life gets dark as a winter's night, share some kindness, bring some light."  Coco and Bear hatch a plan to win friends by giving them some gifts, but they learn that the gift of kindness is better than any other.

After the story, the students made their own lanterns, which can be lit with flashlights or battery powered/flameless candles so they can share their own light.

Mrs. M. put together an online resource and activity center for students during the quarantine. To virtually visit her counseling corner use the following links: beginners through 2nd grade, and 3rd through 5th grades. If you'd like to make a virtual appointment with Mrs. M., please email her at nminichino@ranneyschool.com.
