Fourth Grade Hosts "A Book Tasting" This Week

The Fourth Grade Chefs (Chef Caldevilla, Chef Keenan, and Chef Lynch) are featuring their finest selections the week of March 11 at the Newbery Cafe. "Book Tastings" are a wonderful way for children to become engaged in reading and also to familiarize them with a wide variety of genres.

The fourth grade will be participating in this fun hands-on book tasting for three consecutive mornings. Each student will sample 36 Newbery Honor/Medal winner books, then choose one of the books to read and create a google slide book report. The bulletin boards in the fourth grade pod will feature the reports.

To host the tasting, the teachers have each taken on a role as Chef, turning their classrooms into an upscale restaurant. Each student gets a taste testing packet and a pencil and then sits at a table with three other students. The students have five minutes with each book. The student gets to read the book for three minutes and then takes 90 seconds to write down a review. Then the students have 30 seconds to pass their book onto a neighbor and get a new book. After the students have done all four books at the table, they move to the next table. Each student will review 12 books each day, for 36 total tastings.

The fourth-grade chefs are thrilled to offer such an engaging way to boost excitement about reading!
