Election Fever Takes Hold at Ranney School.
Students Stage Mock Voter Registration, Debates and Elections
The last of the official Presidential debates may be over, but the lively political discussion continues in the hallways and classrooms of Ranney School, as students get ready to participate in a series of voter registration drives, mock debates and voter exit polls… all leading up to their own “election day”.
Ranney Upper School kicked-off the election season with a mock voter registration drive on October 17. Just as in the official voting process, students were assigned to voting precincts and classrooms were designated a certain amount of Electoral College votes. Next week, students in the Upper School’s Government and Politics class will join with students in the Statistics class to develop voter polls and compile the data for public release on October 27. Finally, students will stage a Town Hall style presidential debate with the “candidates,” Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, immediately prior to voting on October 29.
Meanwhile, students in Ranney’s Lower School will go to the polls to cast their ballots on the actual Election Day, November 4. Lower School students, who already registered to vote, will also hear about the candidate’s positions during a special Lower School assembly on October 23.
From voter registration and issue discussions, to mock debates and voting, the Ranney faculty is taking full advantage of this year’s historic Presidential election, turning election activities into teachable moments for students throughout the school.
