It was an energetic and exciting competition, with both teams closely matched in skill, but in the end, Ranney’s Mock Trial Team pulled ahead of Communications High School to win the third round (single elimination) of the Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition, held on January 29 at the Monmouth County Courthouse. Having now achieved its best record to date, with a 3-0 score, the Ranney team will advance to the Monmouth County quarter-finals to be held on Monday, February 2, at the Monmouth County Courthouse.
“The energy and intensity provided by both teams created a riveting competition that really raised our team’s game,” said Dan Lippiello, team advisor and Upper School pre-calculus teacher. “I think both teams felt that had the other team won it would have been fine. It was an intense match – the best I’ve seen in my three years as team advisor.”
The preliminary mock trials are sponsored by the 21 county bar associations, creating competition between student teams from local high schools as they play various roles such as plaintiffs, defendants, attorneys, witnesses, and jurors in a fictional court case designed by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation.
