Ranney School Brings Prom to Senior Citizens

Every week for the past few weeks, thirteen Ranney School seniors have gathered in the auxiliary gym before the start of school to practice the dance steps of a bygone era. The students, all members of the Upper School’s National Honor Society, are learning how to swing dance to the big band sounds of the 30’s and 40’s, hoping to master a few key moves before taking the dance floor this Saturday, March 7 for the third annual “Senior” Senior Prom at Applewood Estates. Middle School teacher Stacy Goto, who volunteers her time for the morning dance instructions, says this year’s group is on the right track. “Every year they arrive at the first class a bit timid and apprehensive about their ability to learn,” Ms. Goto remarked. “But by the last class they are dancing, laughing and thoroughly enjoying themselves.”

The “Senior” Senior prom at Applewood, hosted each year by a new group of Ranney NHS students, was created to give residents of the Freehold retirement community an opportunity to listen and dance to the music of their youth, while at the same time, share some of their experiences as teenagers with today’s younger generation. NHS advisor Kate Greenberg says the students are responsible for planning, setting up and staffing the event. The big band group, The Nocturnes, will perform during the evening. The event gets underway at 7 o’clock and promises to be a good time for old and young alike.
