The Atlantic Brass Band mesmerized the Ranney community on Friday evening, October 30, in a lively and entertaining two-hour performance held in RSPA Panther Hall. The program, which paired Ranney students and professional musicians in a unique concert setting, also helped to celebrate Ranney’s 50th Anniversary and leadership in performing arts for students.
The Atlantic Brass Band, a British-style brass band, is one of the premier performing ensembles in southern New Jersey. Comprised of professional musicians, educators and community members who volunteer their time to perform for countless audiences, they are the Ensemble-in-Residence at Rowan University.
A highlight of the evening was a performance by Atlantic Brass Band member and president Kevin Cotter, who teaches music and is band director at Ranney. In the piece Concerto for Euphonium, he skillfully played the Euphonium, a member of the tuba family, to the delight of audience members. The program also included selections from American composer John Williams, British composer Edward Elgar, and Eric Ball,
considered the father of the Brass Band movement.
Close to 25 Ranney students from 5th through 12th grades, along with the Atlantic Brass Band, closed the show with the program’s finale, Classics in Brass, drawing a standing ovation from more than 100 enthusiastic Ranney family members, friends and music lovers.
At the conclusion of the evening’s performance, Mr. Cotter presented Ranney School with a special plaque of appreciation from the Atlantic Brass Band. In turn, Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff presented the Band with a check for $2,000 to help them continue their fine work and he thanked them for their exceptional and very enjoyable performance.
