Ranney Marathoners Undeterred By Freezing Temperatures

Despite the unbelievable cold snap that hit Florida with 30 year lows, the Ranney Running Club had an excellent showing during the Disney Marathon weekend, held the weekend of January 8.

Despite the unbelievable cold snap that hit Florida with 30 year lows, the Ranney Running Club had an excellent showing during the Disney Marathon weekend, held the weekend of January 8. Runners left the hotel at 4:30 a.m. in 30 degree weather with light snow showers. By the time the race started at 5:40 a.m., frozen rain pelted the racers for the first five miles, soon to be followed by chilly sleet and then a steady rainfall until the end of the race.

There were a total of 17,100 runners in the 1/2 marathon, 16,883 full marathoners, and approximately 650 Goofy Challenge runners (both full and half marathon in one weekend).

Eighteen Ranney half marathoners participated, including 14 students, two former students, Lauren Hoffman ’09 and Anna Rose Johnson ’08, and two faculty members, coaches Dr. Noel Delgado and Nancy King. The three Ranney full marathoners included two students, Jack Scilla and Will Miller, and parent Mary-Ann Guyler.  And, finally we have the first ever student Goofy Challenger, senior Jeremy Lessing.  He completed both the half marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday, for a grand total of 39.3 miles run in just under 6:48.  Amazing!

Highlights include Anthony Papetti dropping 15 minutes from his 2009 time and coming in 11th place in his age group (top 6%). Rachel Brodsky led for the girls dropping her time by 9 minutes and coming in 12th place among her age group (under 6%). Anna Rose Johnson ’08 came in the top 1% of her age group, taking 8th place, and placing in the top 3% of all runners.

Congratulations to the entire team, coaches Delgado and King, and to the six newcomers who ran their first half marathon: Audrey Bradley, Nora Fadil, Peter Goldberg, Maura Guyler, Hanna Miller, and Jinelle Park.

Of the 21 Ranney runners, 15 were in the top 50% of their age group and 10 runners placed in the top 25% in their age group.
