The Ranney Middle School boys’ basketball team captured their second consecutive Central Jersey Athletic League championship on March 2 with an intense 45-42 victory over Rumson Country Day. Trailing by six points at halftime, the Panthers mounted a furious rally in the third quarter, led by Jack Boyan’s nine points. The two teams traded baskets for much of the third and fourth quarter, and were deadlocked with two minutes remaining. Dan Wilen’s jump shot with 1:30 remaining on the clock put the Panthers up for good. In the final seconds, RCDS threatened to tie, but were denied by a stifling defensive effort. Boyan paced the Panthers with 12 points, while Randy Lai chipped in with 10 points and Wilen added nine.
Congratulations to the Panthers for a great season. The boys’ had an outstanding season and should be very proud of their accomplishments. These dedicated and enthusiastic young players are committed to consistent improvement and success. The future looks very promising for Ranney basketball.
