On a cold winter’s night, Middle School students crossed the parking lot to Ranney’s Dining Hall with socks … not just on their feet. Lights dimmed and music blaring, the Middle School hosted its New York “Sock” Exchange Dance on Friday, December 10, 2010. As a means of collecting socks for the non-profit organization known as Holiday Express, admission to the dance consisted of either a $10 fee or 3-pack (or more) of adult crew socks and $5 fee.
All in all, over 70 Ranney Middle School students supported the charitable event. Organized by the Middle School Community Service Club, the New York “Sock” Exchange featured decorations created with the help of Upper School Visual Arts teacher Rebecca Sullivan, dancing, snacks, interactive games and more. Other Ranney School faculty and administration chaperoning the event were Mr. Fischer, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Goto, Mrs. Benditt, Mrs. Mills, Mrs. Rofrano, Mrs. Williams and Senorita Hernandez.
While a total of over 60 pairs of socks were collected at the door of the Dining Hall, 900 additional pairs of socks were also purchased using money from fees to enter the “Sock” Exchange and another Middle School sponsored dance called “Ranney Goes Hollywood,” which took place in October.
Thanks to outstanding Community Service efforts implemented throughout the Middle School and beyond, students at Ranney next holiday season, whether collecting massive quantities of socks or performing other acts of giving, will certainly have big shoes to fill!
