MS Literary Magazine Earns National Recognition from American Scholastic Press Association

After receiving a “Gold Prize” from Columbia Scholastic Press last year, The MAG (Middle School Literary Magazine) received two more awards — this time for one of two magazines issued during the 2009-2010 school year!

On January 2, 2011, Ranney received word from the American Scholastic Press Association that The MAG’s 50th Anniversary edition earned a Myths and Glyphs “First Prize with Special Merit” and was named “Best Middle School Literary Art Magazine” - a recognition bestowed upon only three schools throughout the United States.

Under club founder, advisor and Middle School English teacher Lorrie Benditt, The MAG, which is published twice per school year, received five awards in 2009 alone. According to Head of Middle School David Fischer, the Middle School in its entirety led the magazine to such prestigious recognition. “This is truly a shining moment for exceptional students, staff members on the MAG, an outstanding faculty advisor, and a wonderful writing program presented by Ranney’s English Department,” said Fischer.

With much deserved success, The MAG staff and long-time advisor Lorrie Benditt hope to earn future prizes that highlight their unique talents. Generally comprised of two to four editors and about ten staff members, the 2010-2011 staff of The MAG is currently working on a Fairytale-themed edition that will consist of more illustrations than photos. Already in production, a fantasy story written by Rachel Macnow ’17 and a cover created by Taylor Gill ’17 are some of the many student pieces that will be used throughout the publication.

Congratulations to all who contributed to the 2009-2010 50th Anniversary edition of The MAG!
