Performing Arts Dept. Spring Musicals Announced

The Performing Arts Department is pleased to announce its 2011 Spring Musical season. Led by performing arts faculty, the theater program will uphold Ranney’s mission to provide co-curricular theatrical opportunities for students who commit their time and talents to presenting full-length theater productions for the school and local community.

This year’s season supports cross-curricular learning by highlighting the literature of Ranney’s language arts program. Family life, ethical behavior, and following one’s own heart are reflected in the stories of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and The Trip by Ezra Jack Keats. Drama students from all divisions will bring these stories to life in musical form this spring season with productions of Little Women and Captain Louie, Jr.

The first play in Ranney’s 2011 Spring Musical series, Little Women, which premiered on Broadway in 2005 and won several Tony and Drama Desk Awards, will star a talented cast of Middle and Upper School students. The play's March 24th opening night has been designated a "Middle School Night at the Theater" that will also include a Middle School Arts Extravaganza at 5:30 p.m. in Panther Hall Gallery. In addition, March 25th has been named a "Lower School Family Night at the Theater," with limited seating set aside for Lower School students and their families.

While music by Jason Howland (conductor of Les Miserables and Jekyll & Hyde) delivers a lush, romantic full-score of soaring melodies that support Alcott’s dramatic novel, and Victorian costuming combined with elaborate sets round out the production and bring the class-American tale to life, the show is sure to be a treat for all.
