Music in Our Middle School Week

The Ranney School Jr. Tri-M® Music Honor Society successfully completed Music in Our Middle School Week, an event representing the group’s third service project this school year. Aside from participating in a “Toys for Tots” campaign in December and visiting McAuley Hall Nursing Home in January, members of Ranney’s Jr. Tri-M® chapter spent the week of March 7th highlighting the various benefits of music education to members within the Ranney community.

With March named “Music in Our Schools Month” by the Music Educators National Conference (MENC): The National Association for Music Education, students used various methods to communicate the advantages of learning music. For instance, they used Internet resources such as “Schooltube” and “Survey Monkey” to offer daily video broadcasts and create surveys about music.

Video broadcasts entitled “Why Music?” touched on the importance of music education and its long term effects on the “whole” child. Meanwhile, daily music trivia broadcasts presented music trivia through a “question of the day.” Contest winners who correctly answered each “question of the day” received gift cards to either iTunes or other local retail stores.

When not watching their fellow teachers and classmates on video, students performed other music-related activities. For example, throughout the week Middle School students voted on the best Pop, Hip Hop/R&B, Rock/Alternative, Beatles and Lady Gaga songs as part of Jr. Tri-M® Society’s “Ranney Grammy Awards.” Once all survey results were in and tallied, members of the society announced winning songs during lunch on Friday, March 11. Also on Friday, Jr. Tri-M® hosted an after-school “Musique Carnivale” dance, featuring raffles, carnival games, fun prizes, music and more.

The society will perform its fourth service project of the school year over the next several weeks when it helps the Lower School Science Olympiad team explore “Bottle Music” and prepare for competition. The Performing Arts Department and entire Ranney community would like to thank every member of the Jr. Tri-M® Music Honor Society for his/her hard work and service so far this school year.
