The universe will come alive during Astronomy Week as Ranney School’s Science Department honors NASA’s Year of the Solar System from March 28-31, 2011. The week’s events began with a school wide Space Day on Monday, March 28th. With the sun shining and a chill in the air, Lower and Middle School students, along with their science teachers, lined up at designated cones on the Karagianakis Field to represent the solar system. Every grade wore a different color to signify each planet: Mercury- orange, Venus-green, Earth-blue, Mars-red, Jupiter-purple, Saturn-gray, Uranus-white, Neptune-black, and Pluto-brown. Meanwhile, Upper School students, dressed in gray to represent an asteroid belt, took their place between Mars and Jupiter.
Lastly, the Sun appeared, disguised as Head of School Dr. Lawrence Sykoff, and filled its spot in the solar system. With everyone in place, the entire school successfully represented a solar system. “With no direct flights, it’s not an easy trip from the sun to Ranney, 93 million miles away,” said Dr. Sykoff.
Science Department Chair Marnie Jones announced that the week will continue with special events including a portable planetarium from Startellers, a first grade field trip to the Novins Planetarium in Toms River at Ocean County Community College, and an Upper School Science Expo. During the next few days, students will learn about the Sun and its evident motion around the sky, take a tour of the bright stars, constellations, and planets, learn why the moon appears to change shape and the effects it has on Earth, and take a closer look at the role our Sun plays in the life of the solar system. Additional themes in science classes will include hydroponics, life in space, chemistry of the solar system and planets, and the physics of outer space.
