Atlantic Brass Band Named National Champion

The Atlantic Brass Band — an ensemble-in-residence at Rowan University — was named a National Champion at the 2011 North American Brass Band Association National Championships in Grand Rapids, Michigan earlier this April. Having hosted the Atlantic Brass Band in a joint performance during a fall concert in 2009, Ranney’s Performing Arts Department is excited about future opportunities this accomplishment will bring to its music program.

The Atlantic Brass Band (ABB) is a British-style brass band originally formed as the Wheaton Brass Band in the early 1980s by Yorkshire-born Herb Roselle. Since 1984, the band has catered to audiences throughout the New Jersey and Delaware Valley region and features professional musicians, educators, students and community members performing solos, contest literature, small ensemble works and selections from opera, jazz, ragtime, Broadway and movie soundtracks. Currently led by Rowan faculty member Salvatore Scarpa — with Ranney's own music teacher, Kevin Cotter, on the euphonium — the 30-piece band celebrates its 26th year as one of the premier performing ensembles in Southern New Jersey.
