Ranney School Joins Shore Conference

Ranney’s athletic program was granted general membership within the highly regarded Shore Conference on Friday, April 29, 2011 — a true testament of steadfast improvement and dedication illustrated in scholar-athletes and coaches at this independent college preparatory day school over the past 50 years.

Under guidance from longstanding Ranney School Athletic Director Thomas Moriau, the athletic program has flourished in recent years, having obtained several Prep ‘B’ Championship titles in tennis, soccer and cross country, and an NJSIAA State Fencing Title. Induction to the Shore Conference beginning in the fall of 2012 creates a huge opportunity for the private school. “Participation in the Conference showcases a well-rounded student body, equipped with not only scholarship, but also character and athleticism,” said Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff.

Now the 47th member to join the Shore Conference, the Panthers will compete with other small schools like Asbury Park, Henry Hudson and Point Pleasant Beach in Class B Central. In “an arrangement that makes sense for both Ranney and the Shore Conference,” said Mr. Moriau, Ranney will balance out the number of small and large schools competing in the Conference.

For years, Ranney participated in the Patriot Conference, which consisted of 10 similarly-sized independent prep schools who were not members of the NJSIAA. Although the Patriot Conference has since dissolved with many of its members moving into NJSIAA-sanctioned conferences, Ranney’s membership in the Shore Conference allows the school to keep close ties with some of these long-time independent opponents, while also discovering new top-level competition at other local schools.

Ranney’s highly respected Aquatics Director and varsity swim coach Emmett Walling is eager for the opportunity to attend a Shore Conference championship. “This will finally allow our athletes to face people from their own neighborhood in a very competitive conference,” said Mr. Walling, “leaving more time spent doing homework and seeing family rather than traveling from school to school.”

Currently home to varsity teams in 23 sports that include fencing and crew, the Athletic Department looks forward to hosting future events to schools throughout the Jersey Shore. With facilities second-to-none — equipped with an indoor swimming pool, five tennis courts, and track and Turf Field — “we’re excited for people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties to come to our campus and enjoy everything we have to offer,” said Mr. Moriau.
