RSPA Hosts an International Evening Aboard the Orient Express

More than 380 family and friends of the Ranney School community boarded the RSPA’s Orient Express for a 24th Annual Panther Ball at Addison Park in Aberdeen, New Jersey on Saturday, May 14, 2011.

With boarding passes in hand, guests spent the duration of their International Evening traveling through wonders of the world such as London, Paris, Munich, Venice, Budapest and Istanbul, and bidding in silent and live auctions. A yearly occasion, Panther Ball serves as the RSPA’s signature fundraising event of the school year, and benefits a multitude of educational programs for Ranney students.

As is customary, students from all three divisions once again prepared specially designed crafts and other unique items for this year’s silent auction. From platters and a cookie jar adorned with names, fingerprints and hand prints from Ranney’s youngest Panther Cubs — three-year-old “Beginners” — to a fruit bowl and autographed picture frames, there was something for everyone at this year’s celebration.

The evening’s live auction was a resounding success as guests had the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of items that included a private plane trip to Washington D.C. for four, replete with an overnight stay at the JW Marriott on Pennsylvania Avenue, a romantic getaway for two to London’s The Four Seasons Hotel, complete with a day trip aboard a British Pullman Orient Express Luxury Train, and an Autumn Wine Tasting and David Burke’s Fromagerie Bar-B-Que experience for 16 friends and family members. Also among items offered was the chance to become Ranney “Headmaster for the Day,” which was won by both the Sciortino and Marchese Family.

Aside from an auction, the black-tie affair also included a lively cocktail hour, followed by an elegant dinner complete with entertainment from popular Monmouth County musician and restaurateur Tim McLoone and the Shirleys. Alicia Knoop chaired and Ursula Ayers co-chaired this year’s event, while Sue Grosso, Melissa Stevenson and Mimi Keenan served as the committee’s liaison to the RSPA Executive Board.

In a celebratory toast, Dr. Daniel Goldberg, retiring president of Ranney’s Board of Trustees, thanked all teachers, parents, administrators and trustees for their generosity and support throughout his ten-year tenure as president. While at the podium, Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff and incoming Board president Jamie Price paid tribute to Dr. Goldberg as they applauded his role as a visionary and dedicated leader known for focusing on what is right for the students and the school. “Dr. Goldberg is the greatest champion of our new mission-promise … that every child be known and valued,” said Dr. Sykoff.

Dr. Sykoff also thanked the RSPA for its ongoing support of Ranney, as well as the Board of Trustees for its vision and leadership. He then acknowledged the retirement of Parents’ Association president Sue Grosso, who actively supported the school’s mission and values throughout her tenure. “Her unwavering support for the school and unflinching commitment to expanding volunteerism has been the hallmark of her tenure,” said Dr. Sykoff, who ended with, “our school continues to flourish because of leadership from people like Sue Grosso!”
