Before officially transitioning to the Upper School on June 14th, eighth grade students celebrated Middle School athletic and academic accomplishments at a Blue & White Dinner on Thursday, May 26 in RSPA Panther Hall. This special program also provided the Class of 2015 with an opportunity to share its achievements with teachers and parents who have shown continuous support over the past three years.
Student Council President Ryan Eaddy ’15 began the ceremony as he led guests through the Pledge of Allegiance. As Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff welcomed this year’s eighth grade class of 79 graduates, he spoke of ways in which to make one’s Upper School experience truly count and added, “It’s not the bottom line alone that matters…but what we do above that line that matters.”
He shared, with the audience, five distinct steps to help one acquire good grades and overall success in the Upper School and beyond: take pride in one's efforts, make good choices, maximize one’s potential, become well-rounded, and live a life of good character. After noting that every member of the eighth grade class has the ability to follow each of the above steps, he ended with, “The only thing that stands between a person and what they want is the will to try it and the faith to believe it’s possible.”
In his opening remarks, Head of the Middle School David Fischer recalled his first day as a Middle School student. After sharing the story of how he met one friend named Tim, Mr. Fischer added that friendship is an important aspect of one’s Middle School experience. “Though true that the study skills and knowledge you’ve gained over the course of your Middle School career will help you find additional success, it is the connections you’ve made and relationships you’ve built that will continue to support you through the challenges that lie ahead,” said Mr. Fischer.
With that said, Mr. Fischer turned the program over to Dean of Students David Ketcham and Community Service Advisor Cheryl Fricchione as they recognized eight students for outstanding citizenship and four students for service to the community. Presented annually to those eighth grade students who distinguish themselves with citizenship throughout their Middle School career, the “Citizenship Award” recognizes personal integrity and commitment to Ranney’s Honor Code. Mr. Ketcham proudly called Michael Kmetz ’15, Alexis Auletta ’15, Tristan Sickles ’15, Carl Rivera ’15, Remi Rohl ’15, Elizabeth Roberts ’15, Sean Callahan ’15 and Rose Maisner ’15 up to receive this prestigious award.
Presented by Ms. Fricchione, students Sean Callahan ’15, David Paasche ’15, Samantha Schaaff ’15 and Chloe Triolo ’15 received the “Community Service Award” for consistently contributing time and effort to helping their peers, school and global community. Many community service activities performed this school year included, but were not limited to, giving to the Lunch Break food bank in Red Bank, donating socks to Holiday Express and making bracelets for patients in the Bernard Fromkin Oncology Unit at Monmouth Medical Center. According to Ms. Fricchione, this year’s “Community Service Award” was given to students who possess the knowledge, skills, passion and perspective needed to make a difference. “I am confident that they will continue to improve the world around them as they move on to the ninth grade,” said Ms. Fricchione.
After hearing from Student Council President Ryan Eaddy ’15 and listening to musical selections from Erik Bovino ’15 and Jacqueline Lee ’15, the audience then viewed “Eighth Grade Advisee Video Journals.” New this year, “Advisee Video Journals” gave students from the Class of 2015 the opportunity to express their own personal thoughts on transitioning from the Middle to Upper School this fall. The videos were introduced by Ranney’s eighth grade advisors Amelia Caverly, John Doyle, Marcia Hernandez, Tammy Mills and Betty Williams who thanked each group for their effort and creativity both filming and throughout the school year. Also included in this year's program was an annual eighth grade retrospective video presentation.
The dinner concluded with closing comments from Mr. Fischer who once again thanked everyone for attending and directed all students and faculty to the Commons for a dance. The Blue & White Dance, which was planned and coordinated by Rose Maisner and her committee of eighth grade students, proved a huge success as the Class of 2015 celebrated an upcoming graduation.
Ranney’s Middle School Promotion will take place on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 in RSPA Panther Hall at 2:00 p.m.
