Summer Students Take to Stage
Musicians and actors took to the stage to perform for family and friends at the conclusion of Session I of Summer Programs at Ranney School on Friday, July 8.
Beginning June 27, young actors — grades three through eight — spent two weeks studying technique, vocal production and spontaneous expression with theater specialist Dan Cooley and fellow peers in a non-competitive environment. Through Ranney's
Drama Insights: Character Acting and Scene Study course, students explored the distinctive challenges and rewards of theater, and got a taste of many aspects of the art of acting including improvisational, theater, storytelling, play writing, movement and voice.
After sharpening their drama skills using group training and scene study, students finished out Session I of the workshop with a
Creative Drama Improvaganza in Ranney’s Blackbox theater on Friday, July 8, 2011. Actors
Emma Claisse,
Corbin Nielson,
Jon Erik Nielson,
Jamie Shamilian and
Rebecca Solomon gave a revue-style and fast-paced improv performance that left audience members roaring with laughter.
Meanwhile, RSPA Panther Hall was filled with the sound of music as the
Instrumental Insights: Orchestra class - consisting of musicians grades three through eight - played various songs for family and friends. Musical selections included
Gaelic Castle by Soon Hee Newbold,
The Cucko Clock by Lauren Bernofsky and
Samba La Bamba by William Owens.
Offered exclusively from June 27-July 8, the summer orchestra class was available to advanced-beginner and intermediate string players and focused specifically on violin, viola and cello. After receiving help from conductors Dorothy Sobieski and Patty Gonsky during daily rehearsals, students were able to display their enhanced reading and bowing techniques at the final performance.
