The 2011 Summer Internship Program - Providing Juniors with Valuable Insight & Career Training

In congruence with Ranney’s mission to promote a well-rounded education where every child is known and valued, the school introduced a unique summer internship program to its junior class in 2010. After hosting 12 student-internships in the field of medicine during its first year, the 2011 internship program expanded to include 13 new fields ranging from communications and computers to engineering and law.

With help from Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff and Dr. Ann Ross (mother to students Jillian '17 and Nicholas '17), Ranney’s Upper School division implemented the summer internship program as a way of providing students the chance to work with parent-volunteers in a “real world” setting. “While traditional classroom learning provides necessary building blocks and foundational skills, students crave the opportunity to utilize these skills through ‘real world’ application,” said Director of Admissions and Financial Aid and College Counselor Joseph Tweed.

Approximately 15 students worked independently with a sponsor this summer as they observed, obtained and applied skills as well as pursued various career objectives. Under guidance from David Keenan (father to students Conor '13 and Shane '17), one aspiring engineer and Ranney School student, Christopher Schwake ’12, spent his summer working at a medical device company known as Angel Medical Systems, Inc. Aside from learning how medical devices are invented, designed, built and tested, Chris also gained insight on how a complex technical research and development team operates. Chris’ most exciting task of the summer asked that he collaborate with other engineers to create a “tissue tank” that simulates the human torso. “I worked with their programmer device, wrote a program for the device and set up the tank’s medical implant to run a 96 hour heartbeat file,” said Chris.

Following several weeks of working side-by-side with skilled professionals, student-interns were also asked to complete a journal highlighting their experiences. According to another Ranney intern, Patrick Glodkowski ’12, his internship with William Maher (father to Hailey '15, Kennan '17 and Lindsey '19) at the New York City law firm known as Wollmuth Maher & Deutsch, LLP proved incredibly valuable. “I was able to get a hands-on feel of the law world and even learned some legal terms, codes and issues,” said Patrick.

The entire internship process culminated with a self- and mentor-evaluation that explored each intern’s academic, occupational and personal growth throughout the summer. Ranney and its interns owe their utmost gratitude to those parent-volunteers who participated in the internship program this summer. Because of their dedication to the school and members within its community, students can now “make an impact on the communities in which they live,” said Mr. Tweed.
