MS Coffee House Kicks off Fall Performance Season

The Commons Theater came alive as Ranney’s Middle School singers, actors, comedians and instrumentalists kicked off the fall performance season with a Coffee House on Friday, September 29, 2011. Twelve students and two faculty members were featured in the showcase evening, which contained a variety of solo and small ensemble presentations in a casual setting with round tables and delicious desserts.

Assisted by Upper School Theater Technicians Matthew Callahan ’13 and Eric Chiang ’12, over 13 acts appeared on the Black Box Stage. The evening hosted a wide variety of performances, including music theater vocal solos, classical and popular piano pieces, jazz and modern instrumental pieces, and even a comedy song. Amidst several very talented student-performers, Middle School General Music Teacher Lillianne Torrente also sang “Dreams to Dream” during a vocal performance, while Head of the Middle School David Fischer — a longtime performer at the Coffee House — closed the show with a guitar and vocal arrangement to “Why Georgia.”

The Coffee House has grown into a beloved tradition over the years, thanks to the courage of all performers as well as the hard work of faculty and staff members from the Performing Arts Department. Ranney’s drama teacher, John Doyle, serves as concept designer, and is always looking to develop and refine this annual event. Meanwhile, Mrs. Torrente assists many of the vocalists as a piano accompanist.

Overall, Coffee House is truly the perfect venue for students wishing to pursue their individual creative interests in a supportive and comfortable environment. All are invited to attend an Upper School Coffee House that will take place in the Commons at 7 pm of Friday, October 14. Congratulations to the following performers from Friday’s performances:
