LS Field Day Events Teach Teamwork to Students

Students grades three through five utilized the act of collaboration during a Lower School Field Day on October 6, 2011. Hosted by Ranney’s Athletic Department, the day consisted of a wide array of team-building exercises and other fun activities.

On a brisk Thursday morning under bright blue skies, Physical Education teachers Ian McNamara, Brian Dolan, Barbara Bongiovanni, Eileen McEnery, Emmett Walling and Alexis Snyder led third, fourth and fifth graders through Field Day events that included a climbing wall, cooperative games, relays, “Capture the Flag” and “Cage Ball.”

Located in the Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics’ Auxiliary Gym, students received the opportunity to strategically navigate Ranney’s own rock climbing wall. Meanwhile on the Guidone Track, each class took turns completing activities that relied on team work and communication skills to reach a desired goal.

Scholar-athletes also participated in numerous relay events across the Karagianakis Field, as well as schemed to capture a flag from their opponent’s territory without being tagged during the South African game known as “Capture the Flag.” Finally, classes were divided into four groups back in the gym as they attempted to bounce gatorskin dodge balls off of a balloon ball and onto the opposition’s side in a game called “Cage Ball.”

No matter what the task at hand, each child played an integral role and learned the value of teamwork. The next Lower School Field Day is scheduled for Pre-K through second grade students, and will be held on October 13, 2011.
