US Coffee House -A British Music Invasion

Music reverberated throughout the walls of Ranney’s Commons Black Box Theater as the International Thespians Troupe and Tri-M® Music Honor Society hosted an Upper School fall Coffee House on Friday, October 14, 2011. Themed a “British Invasion,” the Coffee House included vocal and musical performances to songs from such operas as The Pirates of Penzance, contemporary hits by artists like Dido, Amy Winehouse and Adele, and classics made famous by Sir Elton John and members of “The Beatles.”

Music reverberated throughout the walls of Ranney’s Commons Black Box Theater as the International Thespians Troupe and Tri-M® Music Honor Society hosted an Upper School fall Coffee House on Friday, October 14, 2011.

Themed a “British Invasion,” the Coffee House included vocal and musical performances to songs from such operas as The Pirates of Penzance, contemporary hits by artists like Dido, Amy Winehouse and Adele, and classics made famous by Sir Elton John and members of “The Beatles.” According to Performing Arts Chair Tess Nielsen, the evening’s unique theme required that performers step outside their comfort zones and explore new areas. “It challenged them to reach into their repertoire and try some new things,” said Ms. Nielsen.

The show opened with a student performance from sophomore Noah Goldstein, who strummed his guitar and sang the song Mr. Brown made famous by a 1960s English beat band entitled "Herman’s Hermits." Following various solo acts from students Emily Cappello ’12, Jacqueline Lee ’15 and Sabrina Palazzolo ’14, along with jazz teacher Kevin Cotter, the Coffee House concluded with a joint student-administrator performance by Hannah Simpson ’12 and Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. Together, the two performed an acoustic version of Here Comes the Sun as sung by John Lennon and Paul McCartney of “The Beatles.”

With many new and retiring performers present on stage, the evening served to showcase the talent that audiences can expect to see at other Upper School Performing Arts events this school year. These will include:
