Members of the Ranney School community will celebrate a very special evening entitled Our 21st Century Vision for Ranney Athletics on November 15, 2011. In an effort to “develop an even more diversified and competitive sports program,” as specified in the school’s new Strategic Plan, the Athletic Department will present several initiatives entailing new athletic objectives meant to support all students.

At the heart of this athletic vision is the goal of creating a well-rounded scholar-athlete. Nurturing the Ranney scholar-athlete has played a part in the school’s mission for many years, with some of its best students matriculating to highly selective colleges to pursue both their scholastic and athletic passions. New interscholastic options at the lower level, intramural choices for modest athletes across all divisions, and advanced training along with expanded year-round competition at the upper level, however, will elevate Ranney’s athletic program to the same level of excellence that has been the hallmark of the school's academic program for more than 50 years.

While a more detailed athletic plan will not be fully developed and distributed to the community until January 2012, Tuesday evening’s presentation serves as an exciting launch pad for the Department’s extraordinary new direction. Keynote speaker during the event will be Columbia University Athletic Director M. Dianne Murphy, Ph.D.

Since undertaking a complete strategic planning process geared towards promoting short- and long-term excellence in athletics at Columbia in 2004, the University has won Ivy League titles in baseball, cross country, fencing, golf, soccer and tennis, has seen the addition of men’s and women’s squash teams, has embraced the creation of the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame and has initiated several programs aimed at transforming the Columbia athletic experience for its more than 800 scholar-athletes.

Not only will Dr. Murphy touch on the tradition of a scholar-athlete at Columbia University, but she will also discuss how college preparatory schools, such as Ranney, can infuse in their children the perfect mix of scholarship and athletics.

All are invited to join the Athletic Department, its coaches, varsity athletes and former Panther Hall of Fame inductees on November 15 as the school moves forward with a new and expanding vision for athletics as well as celebrates a longstanding tradition of excellence. A light supper will be served at 6:00 p.m. in the Galleries outside of RSPA Panther Hall and will be followed with the program, which will commence at 6:30 p.m. To register for the event, please click here.
