Head of School Earns Quarter Century Award

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has recognized Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D., as recipient of the prestigious 2012 Quarter Century Award. Each year, CASE recognizes leaders in education like Dr. Sykoff for their service and dedication to the advancement of schools. Recognition is bestowed upon those individuals whose careers serve both the fulfilment of their school’s mission as well as the development of their school’s vision - acknowledging efforts in fundraising, campus development, alumni relations and overall school leadership.

A well-respected leader for more than 35 years, Dr. Sykoff is recognized for his distinguished service in education and unwavering participation in volunteerism throughout the community. Dr. Sykoff has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to education and, in his career, has provided exemplary leadership within the complex and competitive environment of private, independent schools.

Among his many achievements, Dr. Sykoff’s professional and personal life stems from a strong foundation of educational excellence and social commitment. He remains active on numerous Boards and has received extensive recognition for his selfless contributions to a wide variety of organizations. For instance, he is not only a Board of Trustees member at the Riverview Medical Center Foundation in Red Bank and American Cancer Society, but also serves as a member on the Eastern Division of the American Cancer Society’s Board of Directors.

In addition, Dr. Sykoff has been recognized for his ongoing support of the Tinton Falls Jr. Police Academy, has been honored twice by New Jersey Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for his outstanding community service, and has received the State of New Jersey Leadership and Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education from New Jersey State Senator Joseph M. Kyrillos, Jr. From 2003 to 2010, Dr. Sykoff was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Count Basie Theatre, where he was named Grand Gala Honoree for his commitment to education and the arts.

In November, Dr. Sykoff spoke on the topic “New Ways to Use Strategic Planning and Philanthropy” at the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools Trustee Enrichment Day in Princeton, New Jersey, and in February 2012, he will speak at the National Association of Independent Schools national conference in Seattle on topics of, “Strategic Philanthropy: the New Sustainability” and “Transformative Communications: Advocacy, Admissions and Advancement.” With Bill Gates being the opening keynote speaker, NAIS anticipates the national conference to yield more than 3,500 independent school leaders and colleagues.

Head of the Lower School and Associate Head for Academic Administration Patricia Marshall said, “The acknowledgement of Dr. Sykoff’s outstanding career is well-deserved as it honors his vision and dedication. This recognition is also an honor for Ranney School, with Dr. Sykoff at the helm of our community...leading the way by example, calling for excellence and bringing ongoing success to our students, alumni and faculty.”

Under Dr. Sykoff’s stewardship, Ranney School has experienced unprecedented modernization and expansion that has resulted in the school's highest enrollment ever in 2011-12, fiscal soundness, and national recognition of students and programs. His vision to enhance and improve the school’s mission of academic excellence within a modern and nurturing environment has successfully positioned Ranney School as one of few premiere college preparatory institutions in New Jersey. In commemoration of Dr. Sykoff’s 10-year anniversary as Head of Ranney School in 2003, The Lawrence S. Sykoff Faculty Fellowship Award was established in his honor and annually recognizes a faculty member or administrator who exemplifies the Ranney School motto of “Knowledge, Vision, Honor.”

Dr. Sykoff will be honored for his achievements during the CASE's annual district conference awards luncheon on January 23, 2012 in New York City. “We received a very strong slate of nominees this year – a real credit to the accomplishment, excellence, and leadership that is exhibited by all members,” said Case District II Chair Robert Sullivan. CASE, a worldwide organization that supports educational professionals, is divided into eight districts; the largest of the eight CASE districts, District II, encompasses the mid-Atlantic region of the United States and spans as far as Ontario Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
