MS Holds Combined Fundraiser & Dance

Seeking refuge from the cold, several Middle School students, teachers and administrators spent Friday evening, December 13, 2011, indoors at Ranney’s Twilight Winter Dance.

Armed and ready with toothbrush in hand, approximately 40 student-attendees gained admittance not only by presenting a $10 fee, but also by providing one or more toothbrushes for charity. Sponsored by Spanish teacher Marcia Hernandez’s “Making a Difference” club, $400 in proceeds collected upon entering the festively decorated Dining Hall were donated to the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. Meanwhile, more than 140 toothbrushes were gathered for the nonprofit organization known as “Holiday Express,” all thanks to those students present at the dance.

Once inside an unfamiliar Dining Hall adorned with holiday lights and winter pines, the students’ philanthropy was rewarded with music and fun as they danced the night away with friends and participated in games led by a DJ and faculty-chaperones Carol Palermo, John Doyle, Stacy Goto, Carol Ann Rofrano, David Ketcham and Allison Reddington. Among several snacks and prizes available throughout the evening was a cotton candy station and stuffed bear raffle. Approximately $300 collected both from the dance’s cotton candy sales and teddy bear raffles was given to the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

With funds raised throughout the evening totaling a near $1,000, the Middle School has much to be proud of. Since September, the division has worked with Holiday Express, the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, the Monmouth County SPCA, Lunch Break, Toys for Tots and more — collecting toys, food, money, and other necessities for those less fortunate citizens.
