At Ranney, every child is known and valued. So far this school year, many athletes and students from various grade levels have soared to new and outstanding heights. While we recognize the hard work and talent of all students at Ranney, a number have recently shared their notable highlights with us, and we congratulate them on these achievements:
SABRINA PARK (Colts Neck)
Congratulations to Sabrina Park ’15 — the first Ranney student ever accepted into the High School Region II Orchestra!
Along with 127 other violinists, Sabrina spent Saturday, December 10, 2011 at auditions held by the Central Jersey Music Educators Association’s Band and Orchestra Directors in John P. Stevens High School. Each violinist was asked to prepare the first movement of Mozart’s Violin Concerto in G Major, as well as several major and minor scales and arpeggios. Of the 48 applicants selected, Sabrina placed 16th in the Second Violin Section. She will next audition for the New Jersey All-State Orchestra on March 17, 2012.
CHRISTOPHER NIVERA (Holmdel)
On December 8, 2011, Christopher Nivera ’17 received word that he will participate in a Jeopardy Kids Tournament, which will be taped in February and air on ABC network sometime in July. In order to qualify for participation in the Tournament, Chris first needed to take an online test, then take a studio test in New York City and later participate in a mock-up show.
ARMANI RODRIGUEZ (Marlboro)
After placing 12th at a Central Jersey Chess Tournament on Saturday, November 19, 2011 Armani Rodriguez ’19 then bested his last performance with a first place finish at yet another Central Jersey Chess Tournament held in Princeton on December 10. Armani also placed first at a Holiday Chess Tournament organized by New York City Chess Inc. and held in New York City on December 18, 2011.
AMAR ANAND (Colts Neck), CHARLIE CHROPUVKA (Holmdel), JAMES GLOVER (Red Bank), EVAN WOSKA (Marlboro)
Under the team name MIGO Ranbots, third grade Ranney students
Amar Anand,
Charlie Chropuvka,
James Glover and
Evan Woska participated in the
New Jersey State Jr. FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Expo on December 10, 2011. Of the 12 teams participating in the event, the MIGO Ranbots were nominated to receive an “amazing movement” award.
According to several engineer organizers at the Expo, they were most impressed with the team’s presentation skills as it expertly communicated all it had learned throughout the process. A member on the Board of Directors of FIRST, Jim Utaski, was also particularly impressed that the boys chose a conveyor belt, the essence of all assembly lines. “I was most impressed with how the boys could confidently ‘man the booth’ without any assistance,” added James’ mother, Priscilla Glover.
UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS
Up against 576 national and international schools, Ranney finished fourth in the state and 42nd overall at the
Knowledge Master Open this fall. With a team comprised of 12 students, 2011 marked the school’s best performance to date as Ranney bested competitors from the Bergen Academies and Millburn.
MELANIE SCOPELLITE (Rumson), SAMANTHA CHIARELLO (Holmdel)
Led by Ranney’s Community Board Chair for Toys for Tots Melanie Scopellite ’14 and Secretary to the Community Service Board Samantha Chiarello ’15, the school’s three divisions managed to collect hundreds of toys for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program this December.
There to greet members of Red Bank’s sixth Motor Transport Battalion in Panther Hall Gallery on Friday, December 16 were Melanie and Samantha. Along with a Marine representative wearing full dress blues, Commander of the VFW — Post 4374 in Freehold — Mike Schenk, also accepted gifts placed beneath Ranney’s beautifully decorated Christmas tree.
