Officer Phil Pays a Visit to LS Pupils

Lower School students — Kindergarten through grade four — spent the morning of Monday, January 23 learning the value of responsibility from a professional animator, Officer Phil, in RSPA Panther Hall.

While this particular assembly was sponsored by the Tinton Falls Police Department, the national program known as “Officer Phil” has used an education-through-entertainment methodology to teach millions of children throughout the United States for more than 30 years. With topics ranging from safety to crime prevention, “Officer Phil” relies on magic, ventriloquism and technology as a means of teaching children information they can not only understand, but also remember.

The morning’s program began with a magic trick, as Officer Phil explained the meaning of the acronym “V.I.P.” to members of the audience. One goal of the “Officer Phil” program is to help students build respect for and strengthen relationships with authority figures, or very important people (V.I.P.), like parents, police officers and educators.

Officer Phil then called one volunteer, Emily Goodman ’21, to the Roberts’ Stage to discuss the role of a police officer in keeping students like Emily safe on the bus, in the car and around the neighborhood.

As the audience began its journey to “Responsibility Road,” they met a few of Officer Phil’s pals along the way. The group's first stop included a visit with Turbo the turtle, who explained the benefits of eating healthy and exercising to keep one’s body safe. Next, it was on to “Courtesy Court,” where the boys and girls met Mac the mouse, who spoke about the dangers of bullying and encouraged each student to communicate responsibly when using the Internet.

Before finally reaching “Responsibility Road,” Officer Phil also introduced his friend Rockin’ Robin. Both Officer Phil and Robin quizzed students Maria Ryan ’21 and Trent Redman ’21 on all they had learned about computer safety, healthy choices, stranger danger and bullying.

Prior to departing, Officer Phil also imparted a safety booklet to each student, asking that they share it with those V.I.P.s in their life.
