Ranney School Announces Plans to Name Aquatic Center After Emmett Walling, Director of Aquatics

An exciting “first” for Ranney School, the Board of Trustees recently approved the naming of the Aquatic Center after one of its most beloved and devoted faculty members, Emmett Walling.

The naming of “The Emmett Walling Aquatic Center” represents an unprecedented moment for Ranney School as we honor Director of Aquatics Emmett Walling, a born teacher who has dedicated more than 32 years to Ranney School and has taught thousands of students to float, swim and respect the sport. It is through his kind encouragement that so many students have taken their first solo strokes, while building confidence and learning life lessons in the pool. A special dedication ceremony in honor of Emmett will take place on campus this spring as the school bestows this tribute to a leader, a teacher and coach who has demonstrated knowledge, vision and honor within Ranney’s scholar-athlete community since 1980.

“Announcing this special news gives me great pleasure as I have known and valued Emmett’s work, which certainly is his passion, for many years," said Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. "Naming the Aquatic Center in his honor is a fitting tribute to an outstanding and exemplary faculty member who has touched the lives of almost every Ranney student for over three decades. He is the embodiment of all things Ranney - a man of knowledge, vision and honor; a scholar-athlete indeed.”

Mr. Walling has served as Ranney’s Aquatic Director and varsity swim coach since 1980. In addition to pool instruction, Emmett trains young Panthers competitively, and has led the Upper School swim team to numerous championships. In 2010, Emmett introduced a competitive swim program to Lower School students and in 2011, he also created an intramural swim program for Lower School students. In addition, he is the Aquatic Director of Ranney’s summertime swim camp. A gentleman, his poised and dignified guidance has helped both students and teachers alike – all of whom have greatly benefitted from his experience, institutional knowledge and sage advice. Recently inducted into the Ranney School Panther Athletic Hall of Fame, Emmett is a member of the Faculty Circle, Ranney School’s chapter of the Cum Laude Society, and a 2006 recipient of the Lawrence S. Sykoff Fellowship Award. On sunny days, Mr. Walling is often seen trading his pool goggles for motorcycle goggles as he zooms off into the sunset on his way home.

We look forward to celebrating with parents, students and alumni at an official dedication and naming ceremony in the spring. The ceremony will also unveil recent upgrades to the swimming pool, acknowledging those parents and alumni donors who generously supported the Ranney Annual Fund and helped with continued improvements to the Aquatic Center.
