Before departing for a well-deserved spring break, fourth and fifth grade students and teachers within the Lower School attended the Athletic Department’s 2nd Annual Hoops Shoot Contest.
It was a race against the clock in the GPA on Friday morning, as students and teachers participated in four separate contests lasting five minutes each. The event began with a fourth grade students (13 baskets) versus teachers (11 baskets) shoot out and fifth grade students (nine baskets) against teachers (six baskets) competition, and culminated with teacher against teacher and student versus student contests.
Perhaps the most exciting moment of the morning was a match-up between Ranney’s fourth and fifth grade teachers. As teams comprised of Stephanie Wilkens, Sean Lang, Janine Mitreuter, Doreen Fowlkes, Jeri Robinson, Dawn Cicco, Kristen Kapcsos, Shana Lindsey, Cynthia Bass and more battled for first place from the foul line, the event eventually resulted in a 10-10 draw after Ranney’s fifth grade teachers managed to secure three baskets in a row before the buzzer. These last-second free throws were answered with hugs from students who happily congratulated their teachers on the floor.
Once all points had been tallied, Coach McNamara announced that the students defeated their teachers 22-17. According to Head of the Lower School Patricia Marshall, the team with the highest score will have the opportunity to call a dress-down day for the division.
