At Ranney, every child is known and valued. So far this school year, many athletes and students from various grade levels have soared to new and outstanding heights. While we recognize the hard work and talent of all students at Ranney, a number have recently shared their notable highlights with us, and we congratulate them on these achievements.
Jillian Ross (Rumson), Shane Keenan (Tinton Falls) & Joseph Mahoney (Colts Neck)
Congratulations to Jillian Ross ’17, winner of The MAG’s “design an app” contest. Jillian’s “app” known as iWorld, which connects users to travel agents around the world for travel information, will be included in Ranney’s Future of Technology edition of The MAG — the Middle School’s Literary Magazine. Aside from receiving news that a descriptive essay on her “app” will appear in the second edition of The MAG, Jillian was awarded a $50 iTunes gift card as well. Also receiving honorable mention for their “app” designs were classmates Shane Keenan ’17 and Joseph Mahoney ’17. While Shane’s “app” was designed to trap drivers using cell phones behind the wheel, Joe’s will help people remember their dreams. Thanks to all 18 students who submitted essays to The MAG.
The Torch
A big congratulations goes out to all club participants, as well as advisor Douglas Felter, as the Upper School’s newspaper — The Torch — recently received first place in an American Scholastic Press competition.
Shane Keenan (Tinton Falls)
Aside from serving as a member on Ranney’s CJAL-winning Middle School boys’ soccer team, scholar-athlete
Shane Keenan ’17 has had a phenomenal year playing for other local and regional soccer teams as well. As featured in the Communications Department’s
December, 2011 Panther Pride Series,
Shane also spent his fall playing both striker and midfield positions on the Ocean Lightning Under 13 (U13) boys’ soccer team, which won the prestigious 2011 New Jersey State Cup Tournament.
In addition, Shane has now been invited to play for another National Soccer Academy U13 team — within the Mid-Atlantic region’s Super Y soccer league — this summer! Founded in 1999, the Super Y-League is dedicated to the progression of future professional players, and contains the following youth academies: Major League Soccer Clubs, USL PRO Clubs, Premier Development Leagues, and W-League Clubs. Affiliated with U.S. Soccer, Super Y has opened countless doors for players looking to be recognized by U.S. National Team programs.
Jacob Field (Tinton Falls)
Not only a scholar-athlete involved in numerous sports offered to Lower School students at Ranney, Jacob Field ’19 also plays football for his hometown. While Jacob first gained acknowledgment based on his positive demeanor and sportsmanship on the field, his growing athleticism later earned him national recognition as a junior scholar-athlete as well. Jacob was one of 65 students nationwide selected for this honor in 2012! He will attend a banquet held at Walt Disney World sometime within the current year.
Isabella Andiorio (Wall), Siobhan Jones (Millstone), Sam Alston (Wall) & James Glover (Red Bank)
Accompanied by varsity fencer Thomas Hearne ’12 and varsity fencing coach Agota Balot, a new generation of Ranney fencers participated in the Atlantic Fencing Academy’s Friday Youth Tournament on April 20. Although competing in their first-ever fencing tournament, Isabella Andiorio ’21 and Siobhan Jones ’21 successfully secured a bye in a direct elimination round to advance to the tournament’s final four. In the end, Isabella took second over her male opponent and Siobhan placed third, respectively.
Also representing Ranney, but this time in the Youth-10 fencing group, were
James Glover ’21 and
Sam Alston ’21. While
James started off strong with three wins in the pool round,

Sam fell 2-1 to his opponent for an overall third place finish. Meanwhile,
James placed sixth in a field of nine competitors. Medals were given out by Ranney scholar-athlete and fencing role model,

Brandon Flynn (Sea Girt)
Theater enthusiast
Brandon Flynn ’14 returns to the stage yet again — this time playing the part of a Courier in the Spring Lake Theatre Company’s production of the musical,
1776. According to a review that appeared on the website known as
The Jersey Shore Rag, “
Brandon Flynn as the young Courier bringing dispatches from George Washington’s army to Congress speaks and sings in only one scene, but that song is a show-stopper as he gives a haunting and powerful rendition on the horrors of war in ‘Momma Look Sharp.’”
Brandon has received much practice to prepare for his role. Not only has he appeared as lead role in several Ranney musicals, and as a singer, guitarist, pianist and songwriter at several Ranney Coffee Houses, but he has also graced the Roberts’ Stage as a member of the Upper School Jazz Band. He is a two-year member of the Tri-M® Music Honor Society and a recent Ranney International Thespian Society inductee as well.
